Featureless Object Scan Common Failure Reasons and Tips for Improvement

Jack Wang ยท Jan 21, 2025

Featureless Object Scan is one of KIRI Engine's most unique scanning methods, as it effectively scans objects that are reflective, transparent, or objects that are smooth and single-colored into detailed 3D models, which are otherwise almost impossible for traditional photogrammetry to reconstruct.

Although this scanning method is very straightforward, it does have an input threshold for successful output. If you're not getting optimal results with this method, here are some tips and tricks that can help you create a better model next time:

  • The model should stay perfectly still throughout the capture. You absolutely cannot move it during the recorded footage.
  • Not moving the object also means you should avoid using a turntable for this scan method as well.
  • Keep the entire object within the frame throughout the capture.

We recommend:

  • Record slowly and avoid excessive movement.
  • Placing the object on top of a platform that allows you to move around it freely.
  • Capture by orbiting around the object from the top, middle, and lower angles to ensure enough overlapping coverage.

If you follow these simple tips, you'll see better results in no time!
