LiDAR Scan Mode
Take advantage of hardware advantages and scan with the powerful LiDAR sensor built within your phone
What is LiDAR Scan?
LiDAR Scan is a feature of the KIRI Engine that uses Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology to create 3D models. This feature is only available on iOS devices equipped with a LiDAR scanner. The LiDAR Scan feature offers a few different scanning methods and purposes.
What is LiDAR Technology?
LiDAR, short for Light Detection and Ranging, is an advanced technology that utilizes lasers to measure distances and generate detailed 3D maps of objects and environments. While LiDAR has been used for decades in fields such as aerospace and geology, its recent inclusion in consumer devices like iPhones and iPads has greatly expanded its potential for 3D scanning and augmented reality applications.
Why Choose LiDAR Scan?
LiDAR Scan offers high speed and precision in 3D modeling. The biggest advantage of this feature is that it can analyze and process the captured data locally. The combination of LiDAR and AR technology can enhance augmented reality experiences, making them more immersive. KIRI Engine has integrated these features into the app for a seamless practice.
Three Different Sub-Methods of LiDAR Scan
Room Scan
The Room Scan feature allows users to use their phones to scan the basic layout and dimensions of an indoor room, quickly generating a rough model. This can be useful for planning renovations or visualizing furniture placement.
It includes theme customization for different design aesthetics, accurate measurement of distances, angles, and dimensions, and a 2D floor plan view with detailed measurements.
LiDAR Room Scan Visualization and Generated Floor Plan
- Scanning the Room: Move the device slowly around the room, covering all walls, floors, and ceilings.
- Ensuring Data Quality: Ensure the guiding lines reach all edges, avoide quick movements to prevent data gaps.
- Optimal Lighting: While LiDAR performs well in low light, consistent lighting helps. Use diffused lighting to minimize reflections and shadows.
Scene Scan
The Scene Scan mode enables users to use their phone to perform a 360° scan of their surroundings, creating a distance-accurate model of the environment with ease and efficiency. For best results, ensure a static environment and stable capturing process.
- Scanning the Scene: Slowly move the device in a 360° motion around the environment.
- Data Quality: Ensure steady movements to allow the laser pulses to capture detailed data from all surfaces.
- Different Perspectives: Capture the scene from various angles for comprehensive coverage. Aim to move around the environment completely.
Object Capture
In Object Capture mode, users first use the on-screen cubic guide to frame the object they want to scan. Then, by moving around the object and capturing images, they can generate extremely clear and accurate 3D models.
Object-Captured Sculpture
- Framing the Object: Use the on-screen cubic guide to frame the object.
- Capturing Data: Move around the object, ensuring the laser pulses cover all surfaces.
- Ensuring Quality: Avoid quick movements to prevent gaps in the data. Capture from multiple angles for a detailed model.
- Optimal Lighting: Ensure consistent lighting to improve the clarity and accuracy of the captured data.

Processing and Exporting
- Automatic Processing: All LiDAR scans are processed and stored locally within KIRI Engine.
- Exporting and Saving:
- For Room Scan: Export and save the 3D models in .usdz format.
- For Scene Scan: Export and save the 3D models in .obj format.
- For Object Capture: Export and save the 3D models in both .usdz and .obj formats.
Device Compatibility
Please note that not all devices have a LiDAR scanner. The LiDAR scanner is available on the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15, as well as the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models from 2020 and later.
